Biofilia® FAQ

Complete revolution within the gardening sector, Biofilia® raises many interrogations. Consult the following FAQ to discover and get more details about the Biofilia® range.

What is Biofilia®?
Biofilia® is the name of the first European range of 100% biodegradable and 100% natural products for the garden.

Why does Biofilia® exist?
Nowadays, we need to consider three important needs: to have an alternative to petroleum resources (raw material for many plastics), to optimise waste management and to answer a growing demand of consumers. The Biofilia® range takes into account these needs as it offers 100% biodegradable and compostable products by using plastic materials.

What is the environmental impact of Biofilia®?
Biofilia® allows a 30 to 75% reduction of CO2 emission compared to a traditional plastic product which uses oil-based polymers. Biofilia® decreases the dependence on petroleum and non renewable energy resources. Finally, Biofilia® products are totally biodegradable and disappear entirely into nature thanks to a compost effect, reducing the cost of waste treatment (2 to 4 times less expensive than incineration and without needing energy).

What are the Biofilia® products made of?
Biofilia® plastic films are bioplastics made from Biolice®, a revolutionary material produced from cereal beans. Biofilia® vegetal fibres are made from jute and hemp or coconut fibres. They can also contain green coffee or cacao. As a consequence, Biofilia® products are entirely natural.

Do Biofilia® products contain GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms)?
Biolice® raw material used for the fabrication of Biofilia® products is certified without GMO.

Do Biofilia® products have a certification?
The Biofilia® range is certified with the OK compost label, only European certification which ensures the total biodegradability and compostability of products, without the risk of toxicity for the environment in less than 12 weeks, in industrial or private compost (EN 13432 norm).

Why is Biofilia® better in the garden than traditional plastic mulch?
The garden is the perfect place to contribute to the environment protection. Biofilia® products prevent weeds from growing around plants. As a consequence, there is no need of fertilisers. Biofilia® products are assimilated by micro-organisms during the biodegradation so that they become compost. They limit water evaporation and allow plants development without wasting water. Biofilia® products’ performance (resistance and lifetime) is similar and even better than a polyethylene product, under biodegradability factors (humidity, carbon, temperature, micro-organisms and rodents).

Are Biofilia® products compatible with biological agriculture?
Biofilia® products are compatible with biological agriculture and respect the natural flavours of products
